Ricardo Botts, a 36-year-old resident of Washington, D.C., has been arrested and charged with the murder of his mother. The incident occurred in the early morning hours of September 21, 2025, in Southeast Washington, according to an announcement by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro.

Botts appeared before Superior Court Magistrate Judge Heide Herrmann on September 23, 2025. Judge Herrmann determined there was probable cause for the charge of second-degree murder while armed and ordered that Botts be held without bond until a preliminary hearing set for October 7, 2025.

Court documents state that Botts attacked his 66-year-old mother in the living room of their shared home, stabbing her multiple times in the head and face. She died within 36 hours as a result of her injuries. Police say Botts fled from the rear of the residence when officers arrived at the scene. He was later located and arrested by the Capital Area Regional Task Force in Chantilly, Virginia on September 22, 2025.

Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department joined U.S. Attorney Pirro in announcing the arrest.

The case is under investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Daniel Bromwich.

“These charges are merely an allegation and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.”
