Carlton Simon, a 20-year-old resident of Washington, D.C., was sentenced to 18 years in prison for the shooting death of Angel Dominguez, age 17. The sentencing took place after Simon pleaded guilty to second-degree murder while armed. He admitted to acting voluntarily and not in self-defense during the incident.

The case was heard by Superior Court Associate Judge Todd Edelman, who also ordered that Simon serve five years of supervised release following his incarceration. Judge Edelman acknowledged the complicated relationship between Simon and Dominguez and emphasized the significant effect the crime had on both families.

According to court records, the incident occurred on May 29, 2025, at approximately 3:00 p.m. Simon approached Dominguez, his classmate, on Florida Avenue NW while carrying a loaded gun. As Dominguez attempted to walk away, Simon pointed the firearm at his back, restrained him, and then shot him in the chest. Dominguez died shortly after from his injuries.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro announced the sentence. She was joined by Interim Chief Jeffery Carroll of the Metropolitan Police Department. The Metropolitan Police Department conducted the investigation, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Rashmika Nedungadi prosecuted the case.
