Guy Cummings, a 30-year-old resident of the District of Columbia and previously convicted felon, was sentenced on Mar. 31 to 50 months in prison for unlawfully possessing a firearm and ammunition. The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro.
Cummings was found guilty by a federal jury on July 16, 2025, following a three-day trial before Chief Judge James E. Boasberg. In addition to his prison sentence, Cummings will serve three years of supervised release after completing his term.
The case is part of the Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful initiative, which supports President Trump’s executive order aimed at reducing gun violence through tougher penalties and prioritizing federal firearms violations.
According to court documents presented at trial, Metropolitan Police Department officers observed Cummings in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood during early morning patrols on Jan. 18, 2025. When officers approached a group standing on the sidewalk in the area of the 300 block of 50th Street NE, Cummings separated from the group and fled on foot between buildings. An officer pursued him without losing sight as he ran through the complex in a circular pattern before tossing an object over a brick wall.
Officers retraced his path and recovered a stolen black Glock 26 pistol loaded with one round in the chamber and fifteen rounds in the magazine from where it had landed in snow beyond the wall. The firearm had been reported stolen earlier.
Cummings’ prior convictions include robbery and carrying a dangerous weapon in 2017 for which he served thirty-six months in prison—making him legally barred from possessing firearms.
The investigation involved cooperation between local police departments as well as federal agencies including ATF’s Washington Field Division and assistance from FBI Washington Field Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Helfand prosecuted this case.
