Mustafa Wright, 32, of Washington, D.C., has been indicted on a federal firearms charge following his arrest in Southeast Washington. The indictment was unsealed in U.S. District Court and announced by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro.

Wright faces one count of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition by a felon. The case is part of the “Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful” initiative, which aims to reduce violent crime in the city by prioritizing federal firearms violations and seeking stricter penalties for offenders.

Special Agent in Charge Anthony Spotswood of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and Chief Jessica M.E. Taylor of the U.S. Park Police joined Pirro in making the announcement.

According to court documents, on August 17, 2025, United States Park Police officers patrolling near Poplar Point and Anacostia Drive SE stopped Wright after observing him driving with expired tags. Officers impounded his vehicle when he could not provide valid registration or insurance. During a routine search, police found a loaded Glock 17 9mm pistol inside the vehicle.

Wright is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition due to prior felony convictions, including burglary in 2014 and being a felon in possession of a firearm in 2019.

The investigation is being conducted by the ATF Washington Field Office and United States Park Police. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney David B. Liss is prosecuting the case.

“An indictment is merely an allegation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law,” according to the statement from authorities.
