Kevin Hopkins, 39, was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison on November 24 for illegally possessing a loaded firearm while on supervised release. The sentencing took place in U.S. District Court and was announced by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro.

Hopkins had pleaded guilty on July 25 to unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon before Judge Jia M. Cobb. In addition to the prison term, Judge Cobb ordered three years of supervised release following his incarceration.

Special Agent in Charge Christopher C. Goumenis of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Washington Division and Chief Pamela A. Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) joined Pirro in making the announcement.

According to court documents, MPD officers and DEA agents executed a search warrant at a residence in Southeast Washington, D.C., on November 20, 2024. Although Hopkins did not live at that address, it was home to the mother of his child. When officers entered the apartment, Hopkins was found sitting on a couch in the main living area.

After he moved from the couch, officers discovered an Astra A-100 9mm pistol loaded with 14 rounds between the cushions where he had been seated.

As someone previously convicted of multiple offenses—including marijuana possession and distribution, carrying an unlicensed pistol, attempted unlawful possession of liquid PCP, burglary, assault with significant bodily injury, kidnapping, stalking, civil protection order violation, and destruction of property—Hopkins was prohibited from possessing any firearms. Most prior offenses occurred while he was under supervision. He had been on supervised release for less than two months when arrested for this latest charge.

The case was investigated by MPD and DEA’s Washington Division and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kate Naseef and Mark Levy for the District of Columbia.
