A Washington, D.C. man has been indicted by a grand jury on charges of robbery and simple assault following an incident involving his former romantic partner in October 2025, according to an announcement from U.S. Attorney Jeanine F. Pirro.

The indictment was issued on February 4, 2026, by a Superior Court grand jury. The trial is scheduled for February 23, 2026, in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia before Judge Andrea Hertzfeld.

According to government evidence, the incident occurred on October 15, 2025, at about 2:30 p.m. The defendant allegedly approached his former partner from behind on W Street NW and took her phone from her hand. When the victim attempted to retrieve her phone, a struggle ensued during which she was struck in the face and pushed to the ground. After both stood up again, the defendant reportedly took her purse as well. A bystander witnessed the altercation and called 911; the defendant then left with both items.

Interim Chief Jeffery Carroll of the Metropolitan Police Department joined in announcing the indictment.

The case is being investigated by both the Metropolitan Police Department and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia.

Authorities noted that “a criminal complaint is merely an allegation. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.”
